Itinerary: 3 days tour from Fes to Merzouga Sahara
Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
Leave Fes in the morning and begin your journey south through the Middle Atlas Mountains, a region of serene forests, quaint villages, and rolling hills. Your first stop is Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its clean streets, alpine-style architecture, and peaceful atmosphere. Continue to Azrou, home to majestic cedar forests where playful Barbary macaques roam freely. As you descend from the mountains, the landscape begins to change, revealing the fertile plains and palm-lined valleys of Ziz Valley, dotted with kasbahs and traditional villages. Finally, arrive in Merzouga, at the edge of the Sahara Desert. In the late afternoon, embark on a camel trek across the towering sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, watching the sun cast golden hues across the desert. End the day with a traditional dinner and Berber music under a star-filled sky in a desert camp, fully immersing yourself in the magic of the Sahara.
Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Sunrise – Khamlia Village – Rissani – Todgha Gorges – Dades Valley
Wake early to experience the spectacular Sahara sunrise, as the first light illuminates the rippling dunes. After breakfast, explore the surrounding desert region in a 4×4, visiting Khamlia village, where the Gnawa people perform their traditional music, and discover local nomadic life. Continue to Rissani, an ancient trading town that was once a key stop on the Saharan caravan routes. Travel onward through dramatic landscapes, including the magnificent Todgha Gorges, towering limestone cliffs carved by the river, creating one of Morocco’s most striking natural wonders. End the day in the Dades Valley, where winding roads, red rock formations, and historic kasbahs make for incredible scenery. Overnight in a comfortable guesthouse or hotel in the valley.
Day 3: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Fes
On your final day, leave the Dades Valley and continue through the scenic Skoura Oasis and the Draa Valley, dotted with palm trees, kasbahs, and small villages. Visit the famous kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and iconic location for films such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the breathtaking Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, valleys, and traditional Berber villages. Return to Fes in the evening, completing your three-day adventure from the Imperial City to the heart of the Sahara, leaving you with unforgettable memories of Morocco’s mountains, deserts, and rich cultural heritage.
